On 2nd February, 1977, in Barranwuilla, Colombia, William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado welcomed their daughter Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll into this world. The name Shakira is Arabic for grateful. She was raised Catholic and attended Catholic schools. She has eight half-siblings from her father’s previous marriage.

At the age of four, Shakira wrote her first poem named La Rosa De Cristal/The Crystal Rose.  Three years later, her parents gifted her a typewriter for Christmas, so she continued writing poetry. Her song Tus gafas oscuras/Your dark glasses was inspired by the dark glasses her father wore to hide his grief after his son, Shakira’s half-brother, was killed in a motorcycle accident. At the age of four, Shakira first heard the doumbek, a traditional drum used in Arabic music which is typically accompanied by belly dancing, and she started dancing on a table in a local Middle Eastern restaurant her father took her to. That is when she realized that she wanted to become a performer.

In the second grade, her music teacher told her that she sounded like a goat, but luckily that didn’t stop her. Between ages of 10 and 13, Shakira met local theater producer Monica Ariza who tried to help with her career. Ariza convinced Sony Colombia executive Ciro Vargas to hold an audition for Shakira. Vargas set up an audition in Bogota, where Shakira pefrormed three songs for the executives and impressed them enough for her to be singned to record three albums.
