On 10th March, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, U. S. Wilma and Ray Dee Norris brought their son Carlos Ray Norris into this world. His father was a World War II Army soldier, a mechanic, bus driver, and truck driver. Norris has Irish and Cherokee roots. He has two younger brothers, Wieland and Aaron. Norris’ parents got divorced when he was 16. After that, his mother, his brothers and he lived in Prairie Village, Kansas, before they moved to Torrance, California.
In 1958, Norris joined the United States Air Force as an Air Policeman (AP). He was sent to Osan Air Base, South Korea, where he trained in Tang Soo Do. After his return to the U. S., he continued to serve as an AP at March Air Force Base in California. In 1962, he was discharged from the U. S. Air Force, and applied to be a police officer.
While he was on a waiting list for the job, he decided to open a martial arts studio, and also to participate in martial arts competitions. With time, he got better and better, and five years later, he opened a chain of karate schools.
