On 25th January 1952, in Kingsford, Michigan, United States, George Jacob Lagina and Ann Lagina-Cavalieri brought their son Rick Lagina into this world. He has a three-year younger brother Marty Lagina. The brothers are pretty close. Rick Lagina was barely 11 years old when he first came to know about Oak Island from a magazine called Reader’s Digest. After many years of service, he retired, and soon after he decided to follow his childhool dream. In 2005, he came across a newspaper advertisement announcing the sale of Oak Island. The island’s famous explorer Dan Blankenship, who was in charge of the island’s sale, gave preference to the bid placed in by the Lagina brothers. Their offer was possible thanks to Marty Lagina. He has been very successful in the business world, having founded a company Terra Energy, which was eventually sold for about $60 million. He later on launched a new business called Heritage Sustainable, which is the largest wind-producer in Michigan. Together with his brother Marty Lagina, Craig Tester, Dan Blankenship, and Alan J. Kostrzewa, Rick Lagina owns 78% of the island which generates tourism earnings.

In 2006, the brothers began their hunt and also worked to make the island into a more comfortable attraction for tourists. History channel was interested in turning the mystery of the island into an educative television reality show, which took some time for Rick Lagina to accept.
