Mirror, mirror, on the wall — who is the richest of them all? Tinseltown is filled with rich and famous celebrities, but you might be surprised to learn who has amassed the most wealth out of them all.
Ironically, despite making their fortunes either by singing, acting, or modeling — many of the richest celebrity women actually made their fortune outside the entertainment industry. Either through clever investing, opening up a side business, or licensing out their image to other companies — it’s rare than a celebrity has made all of their money through one industry. Are celebrities the best side hustlers in the world? It’s possible.
Check out the list of the world’s richest female celebrities in 2021.
5. JK Rowling ($60 Million)
JK Rowling has had a rough year and has courted enough controversy in twelve months to last a lifetime. It all started back on June 6th, where the Harry Potter author took offense to an opinion piece written on Devex.com, which was called “Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate”. JK Rowling tweeted, “People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”
And this ignited a long-burning firestorm of controversy, where many have accused the bestselling author of being transphobic, or a TERF, which stands for ‘trans-exclusionary radical feminist.’ At any rate, JK Rowling doubled-down on her stance, and wrote an essay about it on her website. Although this has arguably been the most controversial year for JK Rowling, it hasn’t put a damper on her epic fortune. She made $60 million dollars in 2021 alone, and her overall net worth is an alleged $1.2 billion dollars.
4. Taylor Swift ($63 million dollars)
Popstar, Taylor Swift, raked in a fortune in 2021 which only adds to her total net worth estimated to be in the region of $360 million dollars. Taylor Swift released two albums back-to-back in the summer of 2019, and 2020. Lover and Folklore both debuted at number one and became the best selling albums of the year.
Taylor Swift may have made more money in this time had she chosen to go on tour in 2019 to promote Lover, however, she opted not to. In 2020, any plans to go on tour to promote Folklore were dashed by the global pandemic. Touring is how an artist like Taylor Swift makes most of her money, as streaming service and the rights to her music only make her a fraction of her income. She’s also a celebrity who chooses not to do many advertisements or offer sponsored Instagram posts, so most of her net worth has been amassed through her music.
3. Ariana Grande ($72 million)
Fellow songstress, Ariana Grande, beat out Taylor Swift to become the highest-paid female musical artist of 2021, despite releasing just one album in 2019, instead of two. The reason Ariana Grande earned nearly an extra $10 million dollars over Swift is that she embarked on a huge world-wide global tour to promote her album, Sweetener. The tour lasted from March 2019 to December 2019 and was attended by over a million people. The Sweetener tour grossed $146 million dollars.
Ariana Grande also has many endorsements and advertising deals. She is a brand ambassador for Reebok and also has a line of perfumes.
2. Ellen Degeneres ($84 million dollars)
Another star who had a controversial year in 2021 is Ellen Degeneres. Ellen came under fire after multiple allegations emerged of being rude to staffers and creating a “hostile” work environment. Multiple clips resurfaced of Ellen reportedly being rude to her celebrity guests. An extremely awkward interview with Dakota Johnson made the rounds on Twitter, and Mariah Carey came out and said interviewing with the comedian was “awkward.”
Despite her setbacks, Ellen still made $84 million dollars from her chat show in 2021.
1. Kylie Jenner ($590 million dollars)
Kylie Jenner is not only the youngest celebrity on this list, but her yearly earnings in 2021 are more than JK Rowling, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Ellen Degeneres combined.
Kylie Jenner earned a staggering $590 million dollars in 2021. The majority of this wealth came from a deal between Kylie and Coty Cosmetics. The young mogul sold 51% of Kylie Cosmetics to Coty for an estimated $540 million dollars.
As one of the most followed celebrities on Instagram, the youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner brood is the highest paid social media influencer in the world, with every sponsored post on Instagram raking in over $1 million dollars. Forbes Magazine estimated that one of the top reasons she managed to become a billionaire so fast due to her cosmetic empire is down to her enormous Instagram following.
Kylie Cosmetics was started in 2017. The teenage Kylie drew in scrutiny after her physical appearance dramatically changed, due to the use of lip fillers. She decided to use the controversy to her advantage and spent $250,000 to launch a range of lip kits. She teased the launch months prior to the release, and when the cosmetics finally went online, they sold out in under a minute, with some buyers reselling the lip kits on eBay for up to $1000! The original lipstick and lip liner combo sold for $29.
Now the company is valued at $900 million dollars, although in 2021 Forbes reported that Kylie Jenner had forged tax documents to overvalue the company. Forbes also alleged that Kylie had fabricated revenue figures, and cited some of the documents from the Coty buy-out as proof. It remains to be seen if Kylie Jenner is still at the top of the richest celebrity list in 2021.
