Dana Nessel, a Democrat running to be Michigan’s attorney general has released potentially the best political ad of all time.

“If the last few weeks have taught us anything, it’s that we need more women in positions of power, not less,” Nessel states in her new online video campaign, while headline stories of public officials accused of sexual harassment flash alongside her. She goes on to ask the viewer: “So when you’re choosing Michigan’s next attorney general ask yourself this: Who can you trust most not to show you their penis in a professional setting? Is it the candidate who doesn’t have a penis? I’d say so.”

And let’s face it, she’s got a point. With every passing day, we seem to learn that there are plenty of men out there who like to whip their dick out in a profession setting. Harvey Weinstein did it. Louis CK did it. Brett Ratner did it. James Toback did it. Matt Lauer did it.

She’s leaning into her womanhood. Hell, she’s using her lack of penis to her advantage

“I want to tell you what you can expect me not to do,” she adds. “I will not sexually harass my staff, and I won’t tolerate it in your workplace either. I won’t walk around in a half-open bathrobe, and I’ll continue to take all sex crimes seriously just like I did as a prosecutor.”

While the ad looks incredibly low-budget, with Nessel perched by a fire and a carved wooden deer placed artfully in the corner, it’s low production value is completely overshadowed by the brilliance of Nessel’s argument – that one of the ways we can quell workplace sexual harassment is simple: elect more women.

In most political campaigns, women are forced to distance themselves from their womanhood, lest it be weaponised into a reason for people to assert they are less fit for public office. But Nessel is flipping that script completely on its head. She’s leaning into her womanhood. Hell, she’s using her lack of penis to her advantage.

Nessel also uses her ad to strike back at people who are suggesting that electing her will result in the Michigan Democratic party having an all-female ticket – as if that’s the most heinous thing that could ever happen. “Yes, I’m a woman,” Nessel asserts, before adding, “That’s not a liability, that’s an asset.”

Her argument feels particularly poignant in light of the fact that this week, 300 female politicians from more than 90 countries have gathered in Reykjavik to try and address the fact that only 23% of the world’s politicians are women. But maybe Nessel has offered up the solution: instead of trying to make female politicians behave like their male counterparts, we should lean into what woman have to offer. Lack of penises and all.
