Paris shooting: Gunman was "focus of anti-terror probe”

A gunman who shot and killed a policeman in Paris last night had been identified as a potential radical Islamist, French officials have said. The 39-year-old man, who has not been named, wounded a further two police officers on the Champs Élysées before he was shot dead. The attack, which ISIS has claimed responsibility for, comes days before the first round of the French presidential election.  

Gina Miller raises £160,000 for anti-brexit tour 

Gina Miller has raised more than £160,000 in just one day of crowdfunding for her campaign urging voters to “do what’s best for Britain”. She is planning to tour the country in a bid to encourage voters to stop an “extreme Brexit”, and says she will use the money to “back candidates who pledge to support a full and free vote on the Brexit deal”. “We need to prevent MPs and the people being forced into an extreme Brexit that is not in Britain’s best interests,” she said.

Nicola Sturgeon attacks Ruth Davidson for her refusal to condemn rape questionnaire

Ruth Davidson has refused to condemn the tax-credit questionnaire sent to rape victims, which asks them to prove their child was conceived through rape. In a rousing speech during First Minister's Questions yesterday, Sturgeon said the Scottish Tory leader’s behaviour was “utterly shameful”, before joining a protest against the rape tax-credit scheme outside Holyrood.

Adam Johnson filmed laughing in jail over child sex conviction

A former England footballer who was last year found guilty of sexual activity with a child has been filmed laughing in prison while discussing his conviction. Adam Johnson is seen on film in the laundry room at HM Prison Moorland, where he is serving his sentence. “It’s not like you f*cking raped her or owt like that?” he is asked by someone in the room. “No,” he replies, laughing, “I wish I f*cking did for six years.”

The Queen is 91 today

Queen Elizabeth II is today celebrating her 91st birthday. She is said to be spending a “quiet” day with her family, in stark contrast to the lavish celebrations which took place for her 90th last year. This is the first of two birthdays she’ll enjoy this year – her “real” birthday today, and her “official” birthday on June 17.
