After 18 years. Which is sad

You could celebrate the fact that Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt have decided to break up after 18 years together. Whoop, you could cheer, the man who plays a dark and mysterious character onscreen but seems to be a loveable goof offscreen, is now single. But realistically you’re never going to meet Jon Hamm, his singleness/availability/back-on-the-market-ness will not affect your life at all, and all you are left with is an empty sense that love simply can’t last.

Especially celebrity love. Especially in 2015 AKA the year that celebrity love died. Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt are just the latest couple to split in a year that has already claimed Gavin and Gwen, Ben and Jennifer, Kermit and Miss Piggy, Kate and Jamie…

And like with those other couples, we have no idea of the intricacies of their relationship and the circumstances surrounding their decision to split, so we speculate. Almost every news report – poor celebrities; normal people have Facebook statuses and divorce selfies to contend with but famous people have actual news reports in actual newspapers – alludes to Hamm being admitted to rehab for alcohol addiction earlier this year. Gawker, meanwhile, cites a gossip magazine report that the couple didn’t want the “same things” (she wanted children, he didn’t). Those suggestions seem to be pulled out of the air though, as journalists search desperately for a “nanny” or “other woman” or something to blame…

Because basically we don’t know. People, even really good-looking, nice-seeming and talented people, choose to finally break up for various complicated reasons that can rarely be summed in a terse statement issued to People magazine. Jon Hamm and Jennifer Wesfeldt’s statement read: "With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history. We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward.”

The end of love is sad, meaningless... Console yourself by watching Jon Hamm teach Elmo about sculpture.
