  • Serves: 1
  • Preparation time: 5 minutes
  • You will need: a tumbler glass
  • 1 teaspoon runny honey
  • 60ml Scotch whisky
  • 15ml freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 5 cloves
  • A cinnamon stick and a slice of lemon pierced with cloves, to garnish

Growing up, a soothingly steaming mug of honey and lemon was my grandma’s cure-all for any coughs, sneezes or barely discernible sniffles. The sweet honey could be satisfyingly twirled into the cup and to a child’s palette, and it took the edge off the sour lemon, which was made clear was "good for you" thanks to the hit of vitamin C. As an adult, honey and lemon is an inviting partnership, and a generous slug of whisky makes this a perfectly balanced, delicious serve – and if you’re lucky, it might sort out that January cold, too.

  1. Spoon the honey into the tumbler.
  2. Add the whisky, lemon juice and cloves.
  3. Top up with boiling water and stir until the honey has dissolved. Allow to infuse for 5 minutes, then remove the cloves.
  4. Garnish with the cinnamon stick and the clove-pierced lemon slice.
