Hurrah! It’s a new year. A fresh start. Who’s excited?! No. Me neither. For January is upon us and, with it, the end of chocolate for breakfast and days off in our pyjamas. This is normally where I’d soothe things with a “treat yourself” purchase (maybe these utterly gorgeous boots or this ultra cosy cardigan) but, given last month was so expensive, I’ve switched to alternative methods – the tried, tested and probably not surprising trick of relying heavily on accessories. It may not be groundbreaking, but it’s a sure-fire way to combat wardrobe fatigue and find new (almost free) ways to revamp an outfit you’re bored to tears of. Plus, you can add some much-needed razz to January while you’re at it.
TRY A BELT OVER AN OLD JACKET
If you're anything like me, you'll have approximately 17 belts tangled up at the back of your wardrobe, doing nothing. Now’s the time to put them to good use, because they look great done up over the top of your blazer or coat. They’re also excellent layered over the top of chunky cardigans or around the waist of your midi dresses.
STYLE A BROOCH
Brooches may feel a bit old-fashioned, but a bit of sparkle strategically employed can help to liven up old outfits no end. For a smart way to wear one, pin it to your coat or blazer lapel. If you’re worried about looking too “done”, dress your blazer down by pairing it with a T-shirt underneath, or stick a brooch on to something more casual, like a khaki or denim jacket. For something a bit different, fasten one to the top button of your button-up dress or shirt (like below).
RAZZ THINGS UP WITH A STATEMENT SCARF
The only thing better than stylish accessories are ones that are also practical, which is exactly where a statement scarf comes into play. It’s cold and you’ll probably be wearing one anyway, but rather than going for grey or navy, why not go for something bright, colourful and very, very cheerful?
CONSIDER A PAIR OF JAZZY SOCKS
One way to liven up your ankle boots is by layering a pair of statement socks beneath them. The below sheer polka-dot ones from Free People are ideal for this and they’re just £10. Or go for something with a bit of glitz, like this stripy sparkle pair from & Other Stories. Even better, they help to prevent your boots from rubbing (inevitable with new boots, like the ones you picked up in the January sales...).
DUST OFF YOUR DOOR-KNOCKER EARRINGS
Go fancy with a pair of ginormo earrings. This glorious bejewelled pair is statement enough to distract from the fact that you can’t be faffed with anything other than a black T-shirt and a pair of jeans on the first week back after prising yourself out of your PJs. In fact, Mango's selection in general is well worth taking a look at.
