Every season without fail, the fashion weeks make for a champion opportunity to test-run and debut brand-new shiny products. If they can withstand the onslaught of fashion week (studio lights, HD cameras and an army of make-up artists and models sweating away backstage in a space the size of a cupboard), then you can be fairly confident they'll see you through a day at the office or an evening do, no problem. This season didn't disappoint, with a new, more eco-friendly hair offering from L'Oréal Professionnel, tons of new beautiful lip shades from MAC and pretty eyeshadows from Suqqu.
The hypo-allergenic hairspray: L'Oreal Infinium Pure
Hairspray has come a long way since the 80s. It's lighter, finer and doesn't leave hair so crunchy that you could crack it in half like a Twiglet. That said, it still smells like petrol and is probably concocted with enough chemicals to light a fire. However, that's all about to change, because backstage at Alexa Chung and Erdem (pictured below) L'Oréal Professionnel debuted their brand-new Infinium Pure range. Formulated with only six ingredients (all gentle, all hypo-allergenic and all fragrance-free), it's kinder to the environment, but doesn't compromise on performance. It's not rolling out until November, but it's definitely one to put in the diary.
THE ULTIMATE NUDE LIP: BOBBI BROWN LUXE LIP COLOR
Nude lippies can be a bit of a bugger to get right, especially since everyone's skin tone is so different that one nude can't ever really fit all. That said, Bobbi Brown's newly launched range of creamy Luxe Lip Colors has a very impressive and wide-ranging selection of nudes (with pink, peach, mauve, brown and tawny undertones) to work across all different skin tones. We spotted the shade Nude Reality being used backstage at Markus Lupfer (below) to add a swipe of dusky pink to models' lips.
The glossy eye trick: Suqqu Glow Touch Eyes
One top tip for looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed came from make-up artist Georgina Graham backstage at Alexa Chung (below). She used Suqqu's oil-infused Glow Touch Eyes across lids to add a very subtle sheen with the smallest hint of shimmer. The effect was eyes that looked bright, awake and definitely not suffering from a hangover – a great one to call on when you're feeling tired (or need hair of the dog). It launched at the end of the August, so is available to buy now.
The Make-up-artist-aprroved lipstick: Mac Powder Kiss Lipstick
The last few seasons have seen crisp, statement lips relax into something a bit more soft and smudgy, which, let's be honest, is excellent news for the non-neat and cack-handed among us. Getting there proved a bit of a faff for the experts, though, involving layering balm, patting, blotting, feathering and blending. So, MAC put their heads together to create the new Powder Kiss, which combines the pigment of a lipstick with the softness of a lip balm. The result is a creamy, matte finish that's easy to swipe on in one go and is thoroughly comfortable to wear. Backstage, it was used at Eudon Choi, Peter Pilotto and Zandra Rhodes (below), where my favourite shade Lasting Passion (a bright red) was mixed with Fall In Love (a hot pink).
The magic brow wand: Nars Brow Perfector
Brows are possibly the hardest thing to get right – too much and they can look drawn on; too little and they can look non-existent – but Nars' thin-nibbed Brow Perfector is ideal for drawing tiny hair-like strokes through brows to make them look thicker, but still natural. And, like the models backstage at Delpozo (below), Erdem, Nicholas Kirkwood and Christopher Kane, it's had a makeover. The previous iteration has been updated for a smoother, more long-lasting finish, while the shades have been given an update to ensure they're the most natural-looking yet. Happily, you can get your hands on it already, as it launched last week.
