What a few days it’s been. Sexting politicians, a president accused of treason by the former director of the CIA and soap that costs more than your weekly shop. Before you lose heart or indeed the will to even get out of bed in the morning, take a moment of respite with the cast of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Now, I haven’t seen the film (yet), but, no, of course the plot doesn’t make sense. Yes, Cher is playing Meryl’s mother, despite being only three years older (don’t you just love Hollywood?) and it’s still possible that Meryl has been killed off altogether (say it isn’t so). But it’s also the tonic we all need right now. Pierce Brosnan singing, Stellan Skarsgard dancing and Cher singing Fernando to Andy Garcia? I’ve never heard of such genius filmmaking in my life. And then there was the premiere, which just proved that Meryl and Cher love each other as much as the world loves them.
There was kissing, hugging and crying (although that was mainly me just looking through the photographs). Meryl stroked Amanda Seyfried’s hair! Everyone held hands!
Oh God, I haven’t felt this much Hollywood-induced joy since Ocean’s 8. Meryl and Cher first met 35 years ago, when they both starred in Silkwood together. As Cher told Entertainment Tonight, “We’ve stayed friends all these years… [Silkwood] was my first film and she helped me. I mean, she was unbelievable. You know because I had no idea what I was doing.” When she was quizzed on how she felt about playing Meryl’s mother, despite being only a few years older, she said: “I didn’t really think it had anything to do with anything. I just thought it was cool.” Cool! Today I’m channelling: Cher.
Meryl simply said, “It was so much fun to see [Cher]. She was divine.” Well, yes, of course she was. If that’s not enough to lift your spirits, Cher just broke the news that she’s recorded an ENTIRE ALBUM of ABBA songs. That’s it. I’m done. I need to go and lie down in a dark room.
