A real treat as far as I’m concerned is just sitting on the sofa and watching telly. I'm almost definitely going to be one of those people who dies when their nest of old newspapers caves in on them. After Christmas I’m going to stay in a Landmark Trust, they’re bloody lovely, the Landmark Trust do up these old buildings which have fallen in to disrepair, little strange cottages and lighthouses and things, and you go and stay there and do jigsaw puzzles and listen to Radio 4. I AM LOVING… The Adam Buxton’s podcast. I am a long-time, committed Adam Buxton fan, and I just think his podcast is one of the most insightful, interesting ones about. The conversations are so candid, and it’s always funny and warm, but truthful in a way that is just so fascinating. I’ve listened to them all a couple of times, I think there’s something about Adam Buxton - he’s such a charismatic and warm person (I don’t know him, literally this is just as a fan), but he puts people at their ease, so the conversations just end up taking really interesting turns, and all of his guests are really amazing, interesting people. I AM READING… My Cousin Rachel, which is a Daphne du Maurier book – I’m absolutely mad about her. I think she’s a real genius and has been hugely underrated, She’s still thought of as being a ‘lady-novelist’ in that slightly patronising way, but I think she has the best grasp of plot of almost any novelist ever. Because of the rather drab title I’ve never really wanted to read My Cousin Rachel, but it’s a really gripping, sexy dark thriller, so I’ve been foisting it on everyone I know. I AM WATCHING Camping, Julia Davis’s show. It’s a masterpiece, it’s one of the best things I’ve ever seen. I’m reasonably unshockable, but I actually screamed in the last episode from shock. It’s funny and unbelievably brilliant, it takes a British camping holiday and builds up malevolence and horror with every episode. I’m also watching Inside No. 9, by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith which is just amazing, it’s also a dark comedy horror and every episode is in a different place, for example a train carriage called number 9 or a cubicle or a house, and they’re all little twisted tales. Fleabag by Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a perfect thing- she's a genius. Dark comedy is something we do particularly well in England, everyone has quite a macabre sense of humour here. Something about the rain, maybe. I AM EATING… spaghetti bolognese mostly, I thought I could lie and say it’s been low GI juice and sushi, but it has absolutely been non-stop spaghetti bolognese. My mother does an absolutely cracking one. I just love it and I don’t think you can do better. There’s never been a swanky restaurant I’ve been to where I haven’t thought ‘yes, but if you did spag bol I’d be delighted’. I AM WEARING… I genuinely mostly wear my sister’s clothes. She has a label called Coco Fennell and she makes lovely dresses, and I pretty much only wear those with some adidas trainers or jeans. They always just make you feel lovely, they’re flattering and girly but not too dressy, so they’re the perfect thing for if you’re running around and you’ve got to meet your friends at the pub later. I AM USING…Red lipstick to distract from my deathly winter pallor. I've never been able to achieve a sexy, Summer glow, but by December I start to look like a Professor Snape so I bung on a bit of Mac's Ruby Woo to pep up the ol' face. I've also started using 'Mane and Tail' shampoo - which is a shampoo for horses - because I read about it in a magazine and I am unbelievably easily led. To be fair to it it works a treat. I AM TRYING… sleep hypnosis YouTube videos, to get to sleep. Sometimes I get the giggles and so they don’t work, because mostly it’s a very softly spoken Australian man taking you to your garden of safety and inspiration. I’m not a very good sleeper so a friend of mine recommend them, and they are quite silly in lots of ways but they really do work. If you have trouble switching off or you’re a late night worrier then they’re really good, the only thing that happens is if your YouTube settings aren’t right it can suddenly go on to a Taylor Swift video afterwards, and it wakes you up again. That happens if you watch a lot of Taylor Swift videos. I AM EXCITED… about writing with Jess Knappett. I worked on her amazing show Drifters this year and we're writing something new together now. She’s just absolutely brilliant and inspiring and funny and generous, and I’ve spent most of every day lying on the floor laughing. I’m also writing my new book, I had a bit of a break after writing Monsters last year so it's been a huge pleasure to start the new one.
