The offensive, sexist, anti-Clinton badges for sale at a Trump rally

Women in politics still have to put up with sexualised comments and being called "bitches"

The woman card may not exist, but sexist badges certainly do.

Last week, Donald Trump unwittingly launched a new meme when he accused Hillary Clinton of playing the “woman card” during her campaign. Trump laughably suggested that Democrat hopeful Clinton had somehow benefited from being a woman, saying: “The only card [Hillary Clinton] has is the woman card. She has nothing else going. If Hillary Clinton were a man, I don’t think she would get five per cent of the vote.”

Clinton’s campaign and other institutions worldwide were quick to pillory Trump’s assertion that women face favouritism rather than sexism, and the Clinton camp was soon offering a free “woman card” with every donation, a move that is said to have netted them $2.4m.

Meanwhile last night, at a Trump rally in South Bend, Indiana, there was clear evidence that being a woman is no straightforward boon, and the discrimination Clinton faces because of her gender was on display in the form of sexist badges.

Jenna Johnson, a Washington Post political reporter covering the Donald Trump campaign, tweeted a picture of pins bearing offensive slogans, which were for sale outside the rally: “KFC Hillary Special 2 Fat Thighs 2 Small Breasts … Left Wing” read one; “Life’s A Bitch, Don’t Vote For One” went another.

Some Trump supporters on Twitter were quick to point out that the badges weren’t official Trump merchandise and that the slogans had been used against Clinton in her previous campaigns, but that defence is weak when sexism has been so ingrained in Trump’s campaign. Trump is, after all, a man who has said pumping breast milk is "disgusting" and that a woman news anchor who disagreed with him had "blood coming out of her wherever".

Donald Trump is expected to triumph over Ted Cruz and John Kasich at the Indiana primaries today, while Clinton faces a close fight with her fellow Democrat, Bernie Sanders.
