Florida shooting: At least 17 dead in high school attack
A former student unleashed a hail of gunfire in a Florida high school on Wednesday, killing at least 17 adults and children, authorities said. The suspect, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, was expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons, police have said. He is due in court today. As the attack unfolded, students were forced to hide as police swooped into the building. The shooting is among the 10 deadliest mass shootings in modern US history and is the sixth school shooting incident in 2018 that has either wounded or killed students.
Oxfam sacked replacement Haiti chief after staff complaints
Oxfam’s country director in Haiti was sacked last year after allegations of “mismanagement” and “inappropriate behaviour”, the charity said. Damien Berrendorf, who served in the role from 2012 to 2017, was dismissed after he was reported through the charity’s own whistleblowing line. Oxfam has made clear that his dismissal was “not related to sexual misconduct” and was “not connected to the case in 2011” where some staff working in Haiti in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake were accused of sexual abuse.
South Africa's Jacob Zuma resigns after pressure from party
Jacob Zuma has stepped down as South African president in a televised address to the nation. By resigning, he avoided his almost certain ousting in a parliamentary vote scheduled for today after years of corruption scandals. Mr Zuma's resignation came after the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party instructed him to leave office by the end of Wednesday or face the motion of no confidence in parliament.
UN Women report: A long way still to go for gender equality
UN Women launched its flagship report today highlighting the continued discrimination against women and girls worldwide. Analysis from the study showed that women and girls account for 330 million of the poor globally. It also found that one in five women under the age of 50 experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner in the past 12 months. The report concluded that unless progress is significantly accelerated, the international community will not be able to keep its promise to realise gender equality by 2030.

Tom Daley has announced he and his husband Dustin Lance Black are having a baby
The diving champion and his filmmaker husband confirmed the happy news with Valentine's Day Instagram photos. Tom shared a snap of the couple cosying up for the camera while holding an ultrasound scan, before Dustin shared a similar photo along with the caption: "A very happy #ValentinesDay from ours to yours." The couple got married in a service at Bovey Castle Hotel on Dartmoor, Devon, in May last year.
