On 23 October – just under one week away – the House of Commons will have the first vote on a bill that could decriminalise abortion across England, Wales and – critically – Northern Ireland. Brought forward by Labour MP Diana Johnson, the bill, if successful, would have the power to repeal sections of an archaic 1861 law that outlaws abortion across the UK.

Because of this law, it is thought that at least 1,000 Northern Irish women travelled abroad to have an abortion in just the last year. Many more take abortion pills at home without assistance, putting their lives and liberty in danger. But they have no choice – in Northern Ireland, women face life imprisonment for abortions, even in cases of rape.

As part of their Now For NI campaign, BPAS have set up a web page, making it easier to email and lobby your MP to vote in favour of decriminalising abortion. All you have to do is put in your postcode, fill in a few details and they will send off a pre-written email on your behalf. It’s simple, it’s accessible and, most importantly, it could significantly change the lives of thousands upon thousands of women for the better.

Let’s give Irish women that choice. Click here to send an email to your local MP.
