I don’t know about you but I’m getting a little bit bored of carrying my bag on my shoulder. It feels a little 2016 – know what I mean? A bit predictable. Thankfully it looks like NYFW is on my wavelength as yesterday an alternative personal storage solution was proffered on the Helmut Lang catwalk. Ladies and gents, I introduce the bra-bag.
In what appears to be a scene straight from a Zoolander film, the cult 1990s fashion label showed oversized leather bras with zippers on the cups. Worn by both female and male models the bra-cum-satchel bags were worn underneath and over the top of tailored jackets. Though no one on the catwalk looked hugely comfortable in their new bra-bag, one cannot help but appreciate its hands-free advantage.
Famous for minimalist tailoring, cotton tank-tops and an androgynous aesthetic, this season Helmut Lang is entering into a new chapter with a new designer at the helm. Shayne Oliver (who also has a streetwear label called Hood by Air) took a fetish-inspired approach, also featuring bum-less pants, harnesses, nipple pasties and leather thongs. I’ll think I’ll leave those in New York, but come Saturday night, expect to find me with keys, money and my mobile stuffed down my bra cup. All in the name of, err, #fashion.
