A new tampon applicator could help make periods more eco-friendly

Reusable tampon applicator D. aims to eliminate waste from period products

Since David Attenborough appeared on Blue Planet II to teach us about the devastating effect plastic waste has on our oceans, the UK has – thankfully – taken action. Tea bags will be made with sustainable materials, microbeads have been banned from beauty products and a war has been waged on non-recyclable coffee cups. It’s time to turn these efforts towards another wholly necessary but pretty wasteful part of life – periods.

If you have a period and use tampons, you’ll be aware of how much paraphernalia is involved – wrappers, applicators and the tampons themselves – all of which eventually end up in the bin. But this might not be the case for much longer, as more and more eco-friendly options are popping up, from absorbent knickers to menstrual cups. The latest is D., a reusable tampon applicator from sustainable-tampon company Dame.

The applicator is made of self-cleaning, BPA-free material and has been designed by medical engineers. It looks just like a normal applicator, but every aspect is improved just a little – it’s designed with an ergonomic grip for better control, it has a semi-matte finish for less friction and the opening has just three “petals” for tighter tip insertion. It’s easy to clean and, of course, has the potential to put a stop to thousands of one-use tampon applicators ending up in the stomachs of turtles.

A wide range of products to choose from is fundamental in making sure every woman can be catered for. An increase in eco-friendly options can only lead on to better choices for both women and the planet

Of course, you still need to use tampons with the D. applicator, so it’s not as eco-friendly as other period options, like Mooncups or Thinx underwear. But every woman’s period is different, and so a wide range of products to choose from is fundamental in making sure every woman can be catered for. An increase in eco-friendly options can only lead on to better choices for both women and the planet.

The D. project is currently in the Kickstarter stage and has raised £30,650, flying past the original target of £20,000. If you want to contribute to the fund, there are just 21 days before the donation page closes and production begins. Who knows – you could change the world with your period.
