  • Serves: 1
  • Preparation time: 5 minutes
  • You will need: A tumbler, a muddler (though the end of a wooden spoon will also do), crushed ice
  • 40g blueberries
  • 6 mint leaves
  • 1⁄2 a lime, cut into wedges
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Crushed ice
  • 200ml ginger beer
  • A sprig of mint
  • Wedge of lime to garnish

Whether you’re doing Dry January or not (full disclosure, I’m in the “not” camp), this drink feels very appropriate for start-of-the-year virtuousness. Blueberries are the star of the show, and they are full of the good stuff: antioxidants, vitamin C and potassium – just what you need after a boozy Christmas. To make it, you muddle, or gently smoosh, the berries together with zingy lime, fresh mint and sugar. Combine that hit of flavour with fiery ginger beer and ice to create a long, refreshing glass. I won't tell anyone if you decide to pay homage to a traditional julep and add a slug of bourbon, promise.

  1. In a large glass, muddle the blueberries, six mint leaves, lime and sugar.
  2. Transfer to your tumbler or mug and add crushed ice.
  3. Pour in the ginger beer and garnish with the sprig of mint and wedge of lime.
