In 10 years' time, when we look back on the summer of 2018, what do you think will be the defining feature? The royal wedding? The heatwave? Rihanna’s skinny eyebrows? My bet is that it will be midi dresses. For if there is one single item that has ruled the last few months it has got to be dresses that hit mid-calf. Bestsellers all over the high street, everyone from Meghan Markle to Oprah has been wearing them. You’re probably wearing one right now – I know I am.

The reason for their success? It’s obvious, really – they’re easy to throw on and go in the morning, they’re comfortable to wear, they can be dressed up/down and they look great. Really great. Whether they’re strappy and linen or long-sleeved and printed, there is ne’er an occasion when a midi dress doesn’t fit the bill. And the delightful news is that, even when summer is long gone, midi dresses are here to stay, thanks to them being a key style for next season. Hurrah. Simply switch up a few accessories and you and your midi will be ready to swoosh into September. Here’s how.

One of the most successful styling tips in the book is the high/low mix: mixing something fancy with something low-key. The result is that "effortlessly stylish" look so hankered after. Midi dresses are the perfect piece to do the high/low mix with. Take one pretty, floral print dress and mix it with a pair of flat ankle boots plus a denim/leather jacket and cross-body bag. Not only does this toughen up your floral midi, it also transforms it into a weather-appropriate outfit during the autumn months.

Go low-key with trainers

As already mentioned, one of the joys of midi dresses is that they look equally lovely dressed up as they do dressed down and relaxed. I love the idea of a midi dress with a pair of trainers – especially a jazzy pair like these star-motif numbers. This look works especially well with a shirt-style midi dress – very laidback chic. When the weather drops, layer up with a jumper and your trench coat.

Mix in luxe accessories

Perhaps one on the biggest bonuses of midi dresses is that they are easy to smarten up for the office and make for a quick, stylish workwear option. Wear with a pair of pointed-toe flats or courts while it’s still warm enough to do bare legs, then switch to sleek boots come tights weather. A blazer, skinny scarf and shoulder bag finishes everything off.

High-octane 70s/80s glam is big news for the coming season – think metallic, lamé, sequins and lots of shimmer. All of which sounds lovely, but somewhat hard to pull off in everyday life. Head-to-toe diamanté while waiting for the 8.06 to Waterloo? No, ta. However, just a splash of bling, when employed in the right way, is perfect for transforming your midi for autumn. A pair of spangly earrings will do the trick, as will a pair of disco-ready ankle boots. Thankfully, low heels are being championed for next season, so look for something with a kitten heel. Finish your outfit with a leather jacket and you’re good to go.
