Say hello to pool slides 2.0

Slip-on sandals have had a makeover for 2018 and they're jazzier than ever, says Hannah Banks-Walker

When it comes to summer, there’s no better treat for your feet than a pair of pool slides. You don’t have to faff about with laces, straps or – God forbid – leg ties (be gone, gladiator sandals), nor do you need to worry about your trotters overheating to the point of swelling, given that they’re as minimal as a pair of shoes can be. While last year (and the year before, for that matter) saw everybody and their dog investing in a pair of Adidas pool slides or something equally sporty, this year is ushering in a whole new breed of pool slide, slider or whatever you want to call them. Me? I’m calling them Pool Slides, 2.0.

To think that, just for once, I could attend an event and not return home with three new blisters is almost too good to be true

The high street seems to have gotten overzealous with the glue gun – in the very best way possible. Once-plain slides are now adorned with glorious bows, joyful tassels and sparkling embellishments. An entire rainbow of colour has been splashed over the current sandals on offer, resulting in a veritable treasure trove of multicoloured flats that are as comfy as they are fun to behold. My favourite thing about this new iteration of pool slides is the fact that they’re fancy enough to wear to weddings or for evenings out, but still won’t look out of place with jeans or, indeed, by an actual pool. To think that, just for once, I could attend an event and not return home with three new blisters is almost too good to be true. And, given my recent penchant for pointed pumps, I can almost hear my tormented toes rejoicing at the mere thought of this liberating footwear.

While I’m proclaiming the benefits of these bad boys, I would also emphasise that they’re very democratic. There are pairs at H&M and Zara for less than £20, while, if you’re looking for a more formal-looking pair that will last for ages, I’d recommend L.K.Bennett’s pretty sandals or Kurt Geiger’s lovely rainbow pair – now in the sale. While I’m on the subject, I’m also very taken with Violeta’s gingham pair and Jigsaw’s vibrant suede buckles. In fact, I’m reluctant to wear a pair of shoes ever again.
