All I want for Christmas is... to learn to be kinder to myself

And this means a few self-gifts. Frankie Graddon is starting with a new bag

Like many people, I will be glad to see the back of 2017. It’s been a real stinker. After months of bleak news, I am looking forward to snuggling into a festive cocoon where the biggest crisis is being left with only orange creams in the Roses tin. Or losing a game in the annual Graddon family Scrabble challenge. Or misplacing the telly remote. Bliss.

Christmas is a time for wishing and I don’t think it could have come at a better time. In the past, my festive wishes have included a puppy (and, yes, I know a dog isn’t just for Christmas), a trip to Disneyland and hair so long I could sit on it. Then there was the year I wished for a snog from Robbie Williams (then of Take That fame). Alas, none came true. This year, I’d quite like a fridge-freezer (snooze). But if I only had one wish this Christmas, it would be for a little more kindness. After the year we’ve had – especially the last few months, which have felt particularly brutal – I think we could all do with some.

Of course, I’m talking kindness to strangers, kindness to family and friends, kindness to work colleagues, but also kindness to yourself. Most people I know, including me, forget the last one and, if 2018 is going to be a kinder year, it’s not a bad idea to start close to home.

Have a bath, call a friend, read the book, drink the wine, eat the cheese, buy the bag

I’m not a big fan of the phrase "self-love", but let’s just go with it – be a bit nicer to yourself, give yourself a pat on the back every now and again, gift yourself a treat. Have a bath, call a friend, read the book, drink the wine, eat the cheese. Whatever works. Me? I'll be starting with a new bag – something glitzy for good cheer and with a handy cross-body strap. Every time I put it on, it will remind me to give a little bit more love to myself and others.
