This all started with Ganni’s chunky pullover in the most glorious Pepto-Bismol shade, which I saw everywhere. By everywhere, I obviously mean Instagram, and my own daydreams, of which there were many. This jumper and I had a long, loving relationship. We went to brunch with my favourite jeans, we stood on the beach looking contemplative with my best chiffon midi dress. Sometimes, we laughed together at how perfectly the jumper tucked into my high-waisted trousers. We had some good times, that jumper and me. The fact that they were in my head is neither here nor there. To cut to the chase, I never did own that jumper but, ever since, I’ve been craving some knitwear of the oversized, chunky variety. I don’t want any flimsy little jumpers. I’m looking for the sort of cable knit that would make your nan blush.
It turns out, 2017 is my year. The shops are full to bursting with the chunkiest jumpers you ever did see and, not only are they comfy, warm, cosy, practical and stylish to boot, they’re – well, they’re comfy, warm, cosy, practical and stylish to boot! What more could you want?
M&S’s bright, long-line roll-neck is a winner with wide-leg trousers or long, pleated skirts (very Céline circa 2012) while Baum und Pferdgarten’s boxy, navy jumper will look sensational with light denim. Zara’s got an embroidered knit if you’re after something more stand-out, Mango’s particular shade of purple is a dream and Weekday, which is generally great for any sort of knitwear, has a lovely green pullover that I want to wear until it’s summer.
While it’s still not completely freezing, wear without your coat and just be sure to layer up underneath – going from a blustery October day to a stuffy office, for example, may require a few minutes respite from a chunky jumper, during which time you may want to sit in your vest. Still completely worth it, though. Ganni who?
