Why I am all about “cost per wear” this autumn

Fashion writer Kat Farmer is looking for special, long-lasting pieces that work hard for their money. Here’s her edit

At the risk of admitting I’m turning into my mother, I am becoming a fully-paid-up member of the “cost per wear” gang. This may sound like canny justification for spending that little bit more than you usually would, but the reality is investment pays. Plus, I think there is something hugely satisfying about regularly using an item that simply makes your day that bit better by using it – things you love, especially things that are bespoke, and I’m a fan of Etsy because of this. You can buy direct from a maker (keeping it in the inner circle of small businesses is a cause close to my heart) and often ask them to customise items for you. Here is an edit of some of the things that have caught my eye recently:

A backpack that GETS BETTER WITH AGE

My find of the season has been the backpack, which is the perfect bag for everyday city meetings. It's hands-free, so it's easier to carry any shopping bags you may accrue on the way home, and it is in a leather that will only get better with age. With this bag, I emailed the designer and asked if I could change the size and make it smaller to fit my laptop better. She also put my initials on the inside pocket for me, which is such a nice special touch. Backpack by Nell Harper Leather, £230

POUCHES THAT ARE “EXTRA POCKETS”

Hands up whose sunnies now have frosted glass as a result of being slung in a handbag, as the case they came in was the size of a coffin? That's why a leather glasses pouch is so useful. I also love bigger-size pouches, like this great pineapple one, for all your everyday must-haves – lippy, keys, pen, mints. It makes finding anything in your handbag a cinch, as it will help catch all the detritus in your handbag that usually just litters the bottom. It makes changing bags super easy, too. Leather sunglasses case by Suede & Co, £15  Pineapple clutch bag by PaperCutts Designs, £160.

THE SHOPPER THAT’S CHICER THAN A SHOPPING BAG

What was that I was saying about a carrier bag? Never again. This, for me, is a no-brainer in your bag arsenal. Works perfectly alongside a backpack for days when you need to carry that bit more and is the ultimate casual “throw everything in” bag. Hair on hide shopper by de Lacey, £159.84

The extra-special everyday necklace

There is nothing that I love more than jewellery I can wear every day that means something. And being able to personalise it makes it simply more special. Buy one for your mum, your daughter, your best friend. Necklace by Lee Renee Jewellery, £69

A LEATHER HOLDALL THAT WORKS FOR EVERY OCCASION

This is the ultimate in grown-up treats for me. Please tell me I’m not the only one who used to shove everything in a “seen better days” gym bag, with a classy carrier-bag accompaniment, as it didn’t all fit in the one bag? For that special night away? No more. Finally living the dream. Holdall by Niche Lane, £226
