Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking

Whenever I think of florals, I think of that Miranda Priestly (The Devil Wears Prada) quote: “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” Fantastic. She has a point. But here we are again: it’s spring and florals are indeed in.

If, like me, flippy-floppy floral prints make you think of curtains and high tea, then this can be a challenging time of the year. But I have a bit of good news – this year, florals are different. Where wafty romance was the name of the game last spring, this time it’s all about toughening things up. Think 70s-style floral frocks with acid-pink spandex boots à la Balenciaga. (I’m joking, obviously.)

No spandex, no pink.

But maybe a denim jacket. Or an army shirt. And some ankle boots. It’s that age-old styling trick – the high/low mix. A floral-print skirt with a leather jacket...

... or a vintage-style T-shirt.

A printed jacket and trainers.

A dress with a tailored jacket.

A floral top and jeans.

Ditsy print with camo.

See? Not a hint of Victoria sponge about it. Florals with a bit of bite. This I can get my head around.

I’d wear Topshop’s wrap skirt with Whistles' yellow T-shirt and plimsoles, and imagine I’m Courtney Love in the 1990s. Or, I’d give & Other Stories' flowery blouse a bit of oomph with jeans and a camo jacket. Heading into work? How about Finery’s midi dress with a tailored jacket and block heels?

Florals? For spring? Oh, go on then.
