The quick party-skin pick-me-up

How to turn “I’ve had too much wine and not enough sleep” skin into “I’ve just had a facial” skin

I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling a bit pooped. I’ve been razzle-dazzling for the last week and there’s still two more to go. I mean, we haven’t even had the work Christmas party yet. My skin, in particular, is looking knackered – flaky, dull, spotty and it’s doing that thing where make-up won’t sit on it properly, like a badly iced sponge. Prue would be horrified.

“My face!” I moaned to a friend over coffee. She reached into her bag and slid across an orange and white sachet – “Try this.” The “this” was Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel Packettes from uber dermatologist Dr Dennis Gross. A two-step treatment that promises to smooth and brighten skin and sort spotty breakouts in just couple of minutes. And guess what – it works.

The treatment is comprised of two pads. The first exfoliates your skin using gentle but highly effective acids known as AHAs and BHAs. You can read all about those here, but basically they get rid of the tired, manky stuff, leaving you with the lovely glowy stuff. They also unclog pores, thus helping booze-induced breakouts. The second pad neutralises the acids (so that they don’t irritate your skin) and contains retinol, which helps even skintone and smooth lines. It also has a dash of something called resveratrol, which is a recognised antioxidant (repairing and protecting). In short, it turns crappy “I’ve had too much wine and not enough sleep” skin into “I’ve just had a facial” skin. In fact, after my first go, my boyfriend asked if I’d been to have one.

I know it all sounds technical, but believe me when I say this could not be easier to use. Get wipe one out of the packet and wipe it all over your face until the wipe feels dry. Wait for two minutes to let the ingredients do their stuff (brush teeth, have wee etc), then get wipe two and repeat. Use after your cleanser on dry – DRY – skin and follow with your moisturiser. My advice is to start off by using the treatment at night; if you’ve never used a product with AHA/BHAs before, then you might find that your skin tingles and reddens slightly until you get used to them. It is suitable for all skin types, however there is a gentle version if you have very sensitive skin. There is also an extra-strength version if you are a hardened AHA/BHA user.

How often to use it? As the name implies, it can be used on a daily basis; however, unless you are made of money (five sachets are £15), I say use it once a week or do an intensive burst when your skin needs some extra help.
