What do model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and me at 8.30 this morning on the Victoria line have in common? Legs up to our armpits and excellent cheekbones? Sadly (for me), no. The answer is facial spray. Specifically, Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir – the original and, widely regarded as, one of the best facial sprays.

I was first introduced to Beauty Elixir when I met Caudalie’s founder, Mathilde Thomas, about a year ago. As soon as she told me one of her top beauty tips was to drink a glass of red wine with dinner every night, I knew I’d be a fan of her brand. Launched 20 years ago, Beauty Elixir is Caudalie's hero product and has earned itself a cult following among beauty editors, make-up artists and celebrities (Victoria Beckham is also said to be a fan). In fact, two bottles are sold every minute worldwide.

So, what’s all the fuss about? Packed with delicious-smelling ingredients, like orange blossom, grape, rosemary and lemon balm, Beauty Elixir aims to refresh, smooth and give a radiance boost to knackered skin. In true multitasking spirit, it also helps set your make-up in place (making it a backstage favourite) and, thanks to a hit of rose, can be used to tighten pores. It also comes in a nifty 30ml size option, which you can keep in your handbag, on the desk or chuck in your carry-on.

All wonderful stuff, but does it stack up? The Pool team gives it a try.

ROBYN: THE PREGNANCY COMPANION

I keep my Caudalie Beauty Elixir in the fridge – next to the salted cucumber slices and lemon halves of my cravings – only taking it out at night to keep on my bedside. You see, sleep does not come easily to the pregnant woman in a heatwave. I waddle sleepily through each day, only to snap wide awake at bedtime and read serial-killer profiles on Wikipedia until sunrise, while my swollen, overheated feet dance merrily atop the duvet. But the Elixir really does help. First, I spritz it on to my pillow, which means I’m more likely to lie back and enjoy the fresh green herby scents than reach immediately for my phone. Spraying my wrists, fingers and feet cools me down and calms the skin just long enough for me to drift into sleep, and re-spritzing each time I wake makes for a much more peaceful night. So, thank you, Caudalie – you’re going in my hospital bag.

HANNAH: THE MAKE-UP-BAG COMPANION

I’ve been looking for a setting spray for ages, as I find that my make-up doesn’t last as long as I’d like. Nothing I’ve tried seems to work, and it all tends to leave my skin feeling like I have too much product on it. I started using Caudalie after a friend recommended it and I haven’t needed to top up my make-up during the day since. It also feels lovely and indulgent, which is always a great way to start my day. I’m always looking for those products that add a little luxury to my everyday routine – it’s one of the best things about beauty, in my opinion. I’m also easily swayed – someone told me that Caudalie is used in all the French make-up-artists’ kits and now, obviously, it’s in mine, too.

LUCY: THE EXERCISE COMPANION

Tuesday is my hot-yoga night and it’s sacrosanct – I never schedule anything else on that night if I can help it and not even a little old heatwave will stop me from going. I love the feeling of accomplishment I get after a good stretch-out and of leaving a hot, stressful day behind and coming out at the end of class into the fresher evening air, tired but happy. Last week, I was given a bottle of Caudalie, Beauty Elixir to test as a post-workout spritz and I have discovered that if I use it just at this point, straight after class and right before I set off for home, it is the perfect wind-down as well as cool-down.

Marisa: the desk companion

4pm is my killer hour. My motivation slumps, my sugar craving rockets and I become irritable, distracted and unproductive. So now I have a million and one ways to combat my daily low spot. A bag of nuts at my desk, a walk round the block, a quick phonecall to my mum and, crucially, something to make me feel alert and fresh. I’m sure a lot of people balk at face mists, but I honestly find them game-changing. Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir smells amazing and also apparently works on my complexion, something very much appreciated after eight hours of air-con in the office. The bottle is gorgeous, it sits on my desk and it helps wake me up in a far more luxurious way than another cup of coffee…

Frankie: the travel companion

I am all for a facial spritz and love how cool and refreshing this is. I’ve been lucky enough to travel a lot over the past few weeks and have found a few squirts of this after a dehydrating plane or train journey is just the ticket. It also smells completely wonderful, so I’ve been using it to create a little pocket of calm when I’m trying to catch forty winks en route. I’m off on my hols in a couple of weeks and will be shoving it in my bag for when I’m hot and bothered or have had a few too many wines (this stuff is fantastic on a hangover FYI). Keep it in the fridge for added cool factor.
