What makes an eye-make-up remover really good? For me, it’s a) when it properly takes off mascara – even the waterproof stuff – without having to rub, and b) when it doesn’t make my sensitive eyes red and stinging. You’d be surprised at how many I’ve tried with no luck. In fact, I gave up wearing eye make-up for a couple of years because I couldn’t find anything that didn’t leave my eyes screaming. But now I’m very much back on the mascara bandwagon, thanks to one saintly product. Let me introduce you to La Roche-Posay Respectissime Waterproof Eye Make-Up Remover. What a mouthful.
I have to say I am a big La Roche-Posay fan – the Anthelious facial SPF is the business, while those with spot-prone skin should give Effaclar Duo + treatment a go. Both fragrance- and paraben-free, the Respectissime range is specifically made for those with sensitive eyes and includes mascaras, eyeliners, brow pencils and eyeshadows, plus my lovely remover to clean them all off at the end of the day.
And boy does it. A few splashes on to a cotton pad and this stuff swipes away all traces of mascara a treat. The bi-phase formula (one part oil-based, one part water-based) mixes together to form a gentle, cooling tonic that effectively budges even waterproof make-up. Last night, it managed to shift Bobbi Brown No Smudge Mascara plus a 6pm top-up of Clarins Truly Waterproof Mascara with zero hassle.
To use, give the bottle a good shake, then dab on to a pad and hold on each eye for a few seconds to let your mascara begin to dissolve, then wipe off. Uber-facialist Su-Man recently told me that, when taking off eye make-up, wipe the cotton pad in an outward and upward motion to stop any downward drag. I’ve been doing so religiously ever since.
