It’s time to bring back body spray

It's hot, sweaty and we don't want to pong. Here's to this season's comeback kid

I can already see eyebrows raising. Body spray? Didn't that get left behind in the 90s? Lots of us will have a special place in our hearts for So...? and Charlie – the cloying, joyful scent of vanilla, fruit, gym bags and adolescence. But nowadays? It's unlikely many will want to smell like a Fruit Pastille. Rightly so, but I can't help thinking we were a little hasty in binning off body sprays altogether, for it seems they've undergone a recent spruce. Traditionally "adult" or upmarket brands like Rituals, Tom Ford and Roger & Gallet have been busy creating lighter, more sophisticated fragrances in lovely, fresh scents. This new breed gently linger (rather than stifle), feel a bit fancier than a regular deodorant, cost less than a perfume (so you can spray more liberally) and blitz away any whiff of clamminess. Perfect for the sweat-fest that is this week.

Here are six of the best:

Best Unisex scent: & OTHER STORIES HAVANA BLUES BODY MIST

This is completely unisex. Somehow tobacco manages to feel light and summer-appropriate against a blend of jasmine and ripe lemon. It's a bit rugged, but fresh, too.

Best for A Pick-me-up: ROGER & GALLET GINGEMBRE WELLBEING WATER

Great stuff if you're looking for something a bit zingy and lively. It smells lightly floral and citrusy with a shot of ginger for added pep.

Best holiday smell: Tom Ford Neroli Portofino All over body spray

Imagine the scent of warm coastal walks and creamy suncream drifting behind you in one glorious trail. This is the ultimate holiday scent, bottled.

Best to chuck in your bag: Yardley English Dahlia Deodorising Body Fragrance

Most recognisably a body spray, this comes in a tin aerosol (great for chucking in your handbag) and smells wonderfully fresh and floral without feeling sickly.

Best If you don't like an over-powering smell: RITUALS RITUAL OF HAMMAM BODY MIST

A faintly aquatic scent made up of rosemary and eucalyptus, it's completely un-obnoxious, just quietly breezy, calming and very clean-smelling.

Best for day to night: The Body Shop atlas mountain rose fragrance mist

Bright and lively, this is a sunny-smelling rose-petal scent with a very fine undercurrent of berry and spice. It's perfect if you tend to find rose too heavy for daytime, but would work well on warm evenings, too.
