It's that time of year again – the turn of the season, the transition from summer into autumn. A pretty spectacular time of year if, like me, you favour being wrapped up in a chunky jumper. It means, too, if we really want to milk it, that we're due a make-up switch-up. Start by chucking out your body cream – you won't need that with your legs holed up in cosy tights (I'm joking. Keep the body cream). But we can also make room for delicious new-season textures, colours and scents – so perhaps a larger make-up bag, then?
Enjoy silky-soft lips
The catwalk has declared soft, smudgy lips "in" this season (so says Val Garland, who created the "just snogged" lips at Preen). Previously, autumn hailed six months of powdery, matte lipsticks and I, for one, am more than happy to forgo half a year of dry, crusty lips in favour of something with sheen. No7 High Shine Lip Crayon (£9) is great for giving dewy, fresh-looking lips and comes in eight very wearable shades, from barely there nudes to bold reds and berries. Failing that, embrace your lip's natural colour and add a slick of softening lipbalm, like Caudalie Lip Conditioner (£5.50).
GET YOURSELF AN AUTUMN SCENT
If you want something thoroughly leafy and wafting of autumn, you can't do much better than Jo Malone's two new-season launches – English Oak & Redcurrant and English Oak & Hazelnut (from £44); they smell like they sound: warm, cosy and comforting. If, however, you fancy something fresh and crisp to cut through the chill, Roger & Gallet's new range of colognes offers a little more variety. Typical summer scents, verbena and neroli, are joined by sticky blackcurrant, heady tuberose and spicy tea.
SWAP your bronzer for blusher
If you're bored of bronzer by now (you're not alone), then swap sunkissed skin for rosy cheeks that look like they've benefited from a brisk walk in the park. Max Factor's Creme Puff Blushers come in a lovely range of shades (peaches, mauves and berries) and give a natural-looking gentle flush on cheeks – all for a very reasonable £8.99. If you're easily swayed by seductive packaging, don't look below at Burberry's magnificent floral blusher – the soft pink is excellent at freshening up cheeks and, let's be honest, it looks sensational. You have been warned.
DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT WITH YOUR NAILS. Maybe
In the interest of mixing things up, you could give the A/W17 catwalk nail trends a whirl – mustard yellow like Osman, checkerboard crystals like House of Holland or neon tiger print like Emilio Pucci. No? Navy and red it is, then. Although, Jasper Conran's moss-green nails looked suitably chic stacked up with simple gold rings, if you do fancy something a bit different, H&M has some lovely ones.
GET ON BOARD WITH eyeshadow
Now that you're less likely to sweat it all off again, it's time to embrace eyeshadow. Variations of copper, taupe, bronze and chestnut have been declared the shades of this season, as have razzy metallics. If you prefer something more pared back, try shadows with just a subtle shimmer, like Rosie for Autograph's fawn-coloured Cream Eyeshadow Stick in Feline Fox (£12.50).
