6 of the best lightweight foundations for summer

The Pool tries the best lightweight foundations, tinted moisturisers and BB creams to keep our faces from feeling sweaty

The temperatures in the UK recently have been reaching near-tropical levels. And while it’s drizzly at the moment, more baking days are on the way. Of course, it's great news for barbecues and sunbathing, though not ideal for schlepping to work. And, much like the idea of heading out swathed in a woolly jumper, the thought of covering my face with a thick layer of heavy foundation in clammy weather is enough to break me out in a hot sweat. Consider, then, lightweight foundations, BB creams and tinted moisturisers as the kaftans of your beauty wardrobe – breezy, breathable and easy to throw on. Only this time, they're office-appropriate, too.

Here ARE six of the best:

BEST FOR BARELY THERE: ALEX HADDOW’S PICK, MAC NEXT TO NOTHING FACE COLOUR

This comes in nine shades, from Pale Ivory to Rich Golden Bronze, feels like there's almost nothing on your skin and is very moisturising. The texture is quite thin and watery, and applies easily, with just enough foundation in there to smooth out any blemishes.

Best for oily skin: Lucy Dunn’s pick, Clarins BB Skin Perfecting Cream

If you often find tinted moisturisers a bit sticky and oily, try this one by Clarins. It gives a matte finish without drying skin out, and a small amount goes a long way. Although it only comes in four colours, the shades are quite broad, so would fit a range of skintones, from fair to dark.

Best for multipurpose: Louise Stephenson’s pick, Bioderma Photoderm AR TInted Cream

Bioderma's tinted cream is formulated with sensitive and reactive skin in mind, so it's very gentle and moisturising. As well as coverage, it provides high 50+ protection against the sun, making it perfect for holidays (although you may like a little bit of powder over the top on very sweaty days to keep it in place and stop shine.)

Best for natural-looking coverage: Frankie Graddon’s pick, Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue

Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue has a super-light formula which gives a natural, sheer coverage, yet still manages to take the edge off blemishes or redness. The finish is matte and velvety, but in no way chalky, and it comes in an impressive 16 shades. A great option for everyday wear.

Best for glow: Elle Turner’s pick, Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser

Best suited for combination to dry skin types, it won't cling to dehydrated patches, gives skin a shot of moisture without feeling greasy, and leaves behind a lovely, healthy glow. The texture is silky and lightweight, and it comes in 11 shades to suit all skintones.

Best for acne-prone skin: Jade Hutchinson, La Roche-Posay effaclar BB Blur

La Roche-Posay's Effaclar range is a brilliant high-street option if you're acne-prone, since its products don't strip skin (which can lead to an overproduction of oil and more spots). Their light, mousse-like BB cream mattifies away excess shine and contains blurring pigments to reduce the appearance of pores and blemishes.
