This little boy’s make-up tutorial is pure joy

Last week, beauty influencer and Instagrammer Laura Sharp uploaded a video of her five-year-old son, Sebastian, doing his very own make-up tutorial to her 100K followers. According to Allure, after nagging his mum all day to let him “film his video”, Sharp relented. And for the sake of the entire internet, we’re so glad she did.

Sebastian’s tiny face looks as if it might burst with excitement as he brushes foundation across his face. He opts for rust eyeshadow (very now), before applying bronzer and highlighter (seriously, this kid knows his stuff) and drawing on eyebrows in cartoonish-straight lines. Sebastian then looks off screen, presumably at his mum, and confidently tells her, “No, that’s not my colour,” before taking a blue lipstick and swiping it over his lips. And then he giggles.

“We both had so much fun!” Sharp said of the video. “And I'm bloody proud of him for every little single thing he's achieved in the past five little years of his life, so why wouldn't I show him off!! He picked all of his products as well."

It’s refreshing for a million reasons – partly because here’s a kid acting like a kid, cheeky grin and all. But, more importantly, because it’s so natural

It’s refreshing for a million reasons – partly because here’s a kid acting like a kid, cheeky grin and all. But, more importantly, because it’s so natural. Neither of them cares that make-up is traditionally gendered, neither of them cares that he’s playing with make-up, rather than trucks or footballs, and certainly neither of them cares that his drawn-on eyebrows are lopsided. He’s just a little boy having fun.

It reminded me of last Christmas, when my three-year-old niece got into my make-up. She emerged from my bedroom with her trademark swagger, my most ridiculous neon pink lipstick covering half her face. Her smile was the same as Sebastian wears in the video – the one you have when you look in the mirror and like the way you look, and and you hope that someone else will think so, too.

So, tomorrow, I am ditching my natural-looking eyebrows and my nude lip – I’m wearing that ridiculous neon lipstick. There are only a few weeks left of 2017, so who cares? Let’s all get a little silly and have some fun – it’s what Sebastian would want.
