Lauren Laverne's Wonder Women

This summer, our own Lauren Laverne will be curating a series of concerts in collaboration with The Globe, showcasing some of the best female musical talent in the UK right now

Added on

Co-presented by The Globe and The Pool's very own Lauren Laverne, the Wonder Women gigs will take place in the intimate Sam Wanamaker playhouse, and the iconic Globe stage. The series will celebrate some of the most adventurous and visionary women in today’s music scene, such as Ibibio Sound Machine, Gwenno, Billie Marten and Mercury Prize nominee Róisín Murphy.

To mark our collaboration we'll also be celebrating over the summer with a selection of Wonder Women playlists and special films on The Pool, including an exclusive interview by Lauren Laverne with The Globe's first-ever female artistic director, the brilliant and innovative Emma Rice. And we'd love you to join us in person too –  check out details and tickets for each of the gigs below.

Camille O'Sullivan, 11 July

Mischievous, sexy and truly original, Irish songstress Camille O’Sullivan seamlessly blends storytelling with interpretations of classic songbooks by the likes of Bowie, Radiohead and Tom Waits. Her live performances are theatrical, mesmerising, and fierce. Have a listen to Camille's music here

Becca Stevens Band, 18 July

American singer and guitarist Becca Stevens bends and merges different genres to create exquisite compositions made up of jazz, indie-rock, pop and much more. As well as covering iconic songs by Stevie Wonder, Frank Ocean and Joni Mitchell, Becca will perform exclusive, unheard tracks from her upcoming album “Regina”.

Flo Morrissey, Billie Marten & Rachel Sermanni, 25 July

Playing consecutively, the mellow sounds and soft vocals of these three young musicians will complement each other perfectly. Expect ethereal otherworldly songs from Morrissey and energetic folk pop from Marten, while Sermanni showcases her ‘folk-noir’ balladeer skills.

Gwenno, 1 August

Welsh musician, DJ and sound artist Gwenno brings her unique mix of melancholy and profound electro-pop to the playhouse, blending electronic and live instruments. She is supported by dance-rock band Pumarosa and electro-folk singer Pixx.

Ibibio Sound Machine, 8 August

The critically acclaimed Ibibio Sound Machine fuse African and electronic music to create an energetic and eclectic mix of funky, upbeat tunes. Inspired by traditional Nigerian folk stories, front-woman Eno Williams effortlessly blends West-African funk with disco and modern post-punk.

Róisín Murphy, 15 August

Mercury Prize nominee Róisín Murphy will become the first contemporary live music performer to grace the iconic Globe theatre in an unmissable evening of electro-pop. Our own Lauren Laverne will warm up the crowd with a DJ set and a Q&A with Róisín before she takes the stage.
