"A new wave of punk is shimmering across Britain, led by women and non-binary musicians" - Cassie Fox

The founder of LOUD WOMEN, a movement that aims to put women on stage and turn up the volume, takes us through her list of the loudest women in the UK right now

Added on

The UK punk-rock scene has long been dominated by loud, swaggering men. But a new wave of punk is shimmering across Britain right now, one led by women and non-binary musicians. Their music is purposeful, celebratory, inclusive and – of course – LOUD. This LOUD WOMEN movement is thriving, producing some of the most exciting and innovative new music for decades.

Here’s my pick of some of the very loudest of the loud women!

- Cassie Fox

Dream Nails – Tourist

Queens of the feminist punk scene, Dream Nails are activists first, musicians second. Tourist was chosen to feature on the LOUD WOMEN compilation EP, released on Punk Fox Records to coincide with LOUD WOMEN Fest on Saturday 15 September.

Zand – Boys Like U

Previously using the moniker Seafoal, non-binary artist Zand combines power-pop dance beats with a hard-hitting punk attitude.

Big Joanie – Dream No 9

They describe themselves as ‘Black feminist sistah punk’ and they are glorious. Keep an eye out for their debut album this November, produced and published by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore.

Nova Twins – Bassline Bitch

Currently blazing a trail across Europe, Nova Twins are incredible live – catch them whenever you can.

Guttfull – Keyboard Warrior

Keyboard Warrior is the perfect response to the sexist online trolls that plague female musicians. Keep an eye out for the band’s awesome call-to-arms debut album this autumn.

The Tuts – Let Go of the Past

Power-pop with a feminist, anti-racist foundation – The Tuts are the musical sheroes all teenage girls need (and us grown-up teenagers too!)

You Want Fox – Dirty Little Damsel

A Nottingham duo playing fuzzy, sexy garage pop. I’m in awe of frontwoman Natalie who carried on gigging all through her third pregnancy – now that’s punk rock.

The Menstrual Cramps – Boyz Will Be Boyz

Winners of the 2017 ‘Her’cury prize for their album ‘We’re Not Ovaryacting’.

Deux Furieuses – Can We Talk About This

Scottish duo packing power anthems.

Petrol Girls - Survivor

Led by powerhouse frontwoman Ren Aldridge, hardcore punks Petrol Girls are just so hot right now. They headline LOUD WOMEN Fest at The Dome this Saturday 15 September.

The LOUD WOMEN 7" EP, featuring the likes of Dream Nails, Guttfull, Ms Mohammed and You Want Fox, is available now
