It’s been the biggest beauty trend of the year and has divided opinion but yesterday at Vogue’s Festival in London, make-up legend Bobbi Brown called BS on contouring.
In conversation with Vogue’s editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman, Bobbi Brown summed up what we’ve been suspecting for months about the cheek-sculpting trend, “I don’t get this whole contouring thing…[it] makes you look like you have dirt on your face.” Err, exactly.
Made popular most notably by Kim Kardashian, the art of contouring involves using a dark bronzing powder to shade underneath your cheekbones to give the illusion of a slimmer face. This technique can also be used to create a defined jaw line and slim down the bridge of your nose. While there is no denying that make-up is used to tweak appearances – eyes look bigger with mascara, lips look fuller with gloss – the face-altering effect of contouring hints at something more extreme, as Brown explained “It’s [contouring] basically saying there's something wrong with how you look."
With a brand built on the ethos of simple-to-use products in all skin tones that enhance rather than perfect, the Bobbi Brown approach to beauty is a far cry from a Kardashian caricature: “Women look the most beautiful when they're being themselves."
